I just love stormy weather! Looking at it and photographing in it. The spring weather has been a bit erratic lately, and I’ve had to reschedule several sessions, but for those who don’t mind chancing the rain can get some amazing portraits with beautiful detail in the sky. “Very Wizard-of-Oz-ish” someone said about this photo on my FB page.

Chelsea + Karson ~ Back from Africa!

Chelsea and Karson have spent the last few months in Africa so it was hard to refrain from 20 questions while photographing their engagements. I haven’t been to Africa yet, but I’ve read plenty of books about the different regions in Africa while I was getting my degree in Anthropology. A recent wedding inquiry from Africa prompted me to ask Chelsea and Karson some basic questions {because I am a picky eater} and I enjoy listening to people talk about their travel experiences. Aside from a few bug bites and crazy tan lines from their Chaco shoes, Chelsea and Karson came back much in love. I’m excited to photograph their wedding soon, congrats love birds!

Kristine & Louis

Kristine and Louis are newbies to Park City so it’s no wonder they chose the McPolin Barn to have their engagements done. It’s a perfect blend of mountain scenery and rustic beauty. Kristine’s daughter, Maggie came along for the shoot, and let me tell you, this 7 year-old loves being in front of the camera! Motivational Speakers

This guy is a natural when it comes to engaging with an audience. He knows how to talk so people will listen. Dustin Godnick is a motivational speaker. I drove to Timberline Middle School in Alpine to photograph Dustin and fellow motivational speaker Chad Hymas speak to youngsters about making choices. Both Dustin and Chad have a powerful story based on true life experience and learning to overcome the consequences of their choices. While Chad travels all over the world speaking to a wide variety of audiences, Dustin is on his way to help change the lives of others.

Memorial of a Firefighter

A couple of weeks ago I had the honor of photographing the memorial service of a retired firefighter. It was beautiful and emotional. The lovely sound of Scottish bagpipes played as a firefighter in uniform walked through water, signifying the “last call”. This was an emotional moment for me, and even though I had never met Dick Dunn, my eyes welled up at the significance of that moment, watching the family holding and comforting each other. I’ll never forget his sweet wife clutching a feather from the dove after she had released the last one. What an honor, to tell this story on a beautiful day surrounded by love and respect for this man.

Pawsatch Snow Dogs

A couple of months ago I met up with my daughter’s class in Midway for their field trip to ride on a dog sled pulled by Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies ~many of them rescue dogs. The owners of Pawsatch Snow Dogs offered to have me to ride on the back of the guide snowmobile (so I could photograph a moving sled from a moving snowmobile…) how could I say no? The adrenaline was pumping as I clutched my camera and held on for life ~ those dogs are fast! After the ride, the kids played with a litter of 5 week-old puppies and drank hot chocolate in the trailer. Fun times!

The Moments in Between

I love the photos that are taken before and after the family portraits. I find that these shots are often the ones families choose to hang on their wall. The family portraits are of course important too, (and greatly appreciated by the grandparents), but you can always find some tender moments in between. The baby giggling in her crib, her big brother reaching over to touch her tiny fingers, ~ they are all great moments. Photographing these ‘in between moments’ help paint the bigger picture. Thank you to the Beck’s for inviting me into their home to capture their beautiful family.

Keystone Montessori School

A few months ago I photographed this charming little Montessori school in Park City, Utah. After meeting with Sylvie-Anne, the director, we came up with a list of possible shots for their website, but decided to take a more organic approach to photographing the children. I stood back and observed, slowly moving around the classroom snapping details and shots of the children working, trying not to interrupt their daily routine. As a former Montessori teacher, I enjoyed revisiting the classroom from the perspective of being behind the lens, capturing the natural flow of a peaceful learning environment. I feel fortunate that both of my kids have been able to experience being in a Montessori classroom. My youngest is still enrolled and loving it!
