Kara & Mark ~ High West Distillery

I love the feel of the High West Distillery ~ rustic, cozy and beautifully decorated. Thanks to the friendly owners of the High West for allowing us to shoot engagements inside the distillery, it was the perfect location for Kara and Mark, who love to hang out there  and relax with a drink after a hard day of climbing. Kara and Mark met rock climbing in 2010 and have been inseparable since. I am super excited to shoot their wedding this summer! Cheers to Kara & Mark!

Kara & Mark Engaged!

I am honored and excited that I will be shooting my sister’s wedding next month. Mark proposed to Kara on Christmas day. We couldn’t have picked a better guy for her and to join our family! We love Mark, (and Kara of course)! They plan to get married in Park City in the middle of June. Congrats Kara & Mark! Engagement pictures coming soon!

The Draper Family

This lovely little family with two kids and an expectant mama braved the cold weather to do a shoot by the trains in Charleston. My favorite shot is the black and white portrait of this little boy. His long dark eyelashes, wavy hair, rosy cheeks and stoic expression was intriguing. I also love the architecture of the Tate Barn in Soldier Hollow which is located just down the road from the railroad tracks!

The Ghost Trolley ~ Fun with Motion Blur

A few weeks ago I headed up to Main Street in freezing temperatures with a buddy and a tripod to give a lesson on creating motion blur at night. The Trolley in motion in the above picture was taken with a 50 mm 1.4 at f/7 ISO 100 at 4 seconds.

How to create motion blur

Getting some motion blur in your images requires you play around with the shutter speed. Downtown Park City is perfect place to practice because the trolley runs and up and down Main street all evening so you can keep trying until you get the results you want. An added bonus: the trolley is heated, in fact, toasty warm! When your fingers start to go numb you can hop on for a run to warm up and take some shots from inside the bus!

I won’t go into too much detail on how to create motion blur because there are plenty of resources online that have beginner tips and outline step by step how to create motion blur. Here is a great article featured on the site Digital Photography School, by Darren Rowse, the editor and founder  (the tutorial was submitted by Emily Handcock): http://www.digital-photography-school.com/a-beginners-to-capturing-motion-in-your-photography

Saying Goodbye to Brook

It’s been a couple of months since we said goodbye to our beautiful lab, Brook. She was a wonderful part of our family for nine years, and we miss her everyday. I was hesitant to post this on my blog because it is so personal, but it was also a privilege to have that time to tell her how much she meant to us and for me to capture these emotional and intimate moments.

Here is the original post I made to facebook a couple of weeks after she passed:

After we learned that Brook’s kidneys were failing the day after Thanksgiving, we tried to prepare ourselves for her condition. The vet told us we were looking at 6 weeks to 6 months; however, she quickly started to lose weight and as her body stopped ridding itself of toxins, it plagued her joints and she limped in pain. We tried to manage her pain with medication and make her comfortable while we read lots of information about symptoms and what to expect. It had only been a short two weeks from when we took her in to when we decided she was suffering too much. Lance had said from the beginning that the humane thing to do was not to let her suffer. She was already skin and bones and when she hadn’t eaten in days we decided it was time. Although it was the kind thing to do, it was also a hard thing to do. To have to explain to our eleven year-old that she was slowly starving to death, and even though we wanted to hold on to her longer, we were only thinking of what was best for Brook. I convinced Lance to wait until the next morning. I needed to say goodbye, our daughters needed to say goodbye. I also felt the need to photograph our precious last moments with her. Somehow it helped me grieve.

My heart still aches a little when Mirabelle, our youngest asks “Where is my dog? I love my dog.” I wish I could figure out a way to tell her she isn’t coming back. I know she doesn’t understand. “I love her too.” I respond.

Annie & Craig ~ Stein Eriksen Lodge at Deer Valley

A beautiful destination wedding I photographed as a second shooter for Erin Kate photography. :) Congrats to this wonderful couple from San Francisco!

A Witch’s Tea Party

Now here is a beautifully organized event! A Halloween-themed party for mothers and daughters called “The Witch’s Tea”. I photographed this event for the last two years and it is pure fun to watching these gals party. This year the host hired a DJ and did a wonderful job preparing and decorating a club house. It is a fun-filled night of spells, story-telling, brew-making, dancing and yummy treats! I dressed up in my best witch attire and topped it off with my favorite  fancy witch hat and had a blast!

P.s. Don’t those cupcakes look amazing?!

The Poynton Family

When Kimberly first contacted me for a family photo shoot I wrote down three important things: 1. She did’t have many photos of her and her husband together. 2. Her husband was very tall, (the top of his head tended to get cropped out of pictures). 3. Scheduling a photo shoot would be a challenge since they both work opposite schedules for an airline company.

After the photoshoot I learned some important things too: 1. Even in 30 degree weather people can look warm with a golden sunset reflecting in the water. 2. Middle school boys, in fact , can be very photogenic (mom had to say several times “leave the photographer alone!”). 3. Willow Creek park in Park City is a great winter location!

What a wonderful family to work with!

Zoe & Rocky

I never get tired of photographing people on Main Street. I’ve done at least half a dozen shoots there in the last month. Around the historic buildings you’ll find sculptures, fun textures and colors and little nooks to place your subjects in. You can do dozens of photo shoots there and make each one look like an entirely different location. It seems like it’s always buzzing with people ~ a combination of locals and tourists. I like the skiers in the background with their pom hats and colorful jackets. On a chilly day you can warm up by stepping into a little coffee shop, Dolly’s book store or inside the Galleria mall and make it part of the photo shoot. I have always had a good experience with shop owners letting me take a few snapshots inside, after all I’m bringing business with me.

This adorable couple met up with me for engagements exactly one year from the day they plan to get married here in Park City. Zoe & Rocky are laid back and easy-going. They met in Atlanta but reside in Texas, so this will be a destination wedding and ski vacation for them! Congrats on the engagement!

Alayna & Andrew

I met up with Alayna and Andrew for some wedding portraits on the first day of the New Year. It was a beautiful day in Salt Lake City. The sun was shining and Temple Square was so quiet and peaceful ~ like we had the entire place to ourselves!  2012 is going to be a great year! Congrats newlyweds!
